Jhon Duran rubs salt in West Ham United wounds, Tim Steidten really let fans down

Tim Steidten will no doubt regret his decision to not sign Jhon Duran for West Ham United this summer.

The Hammers and Duran were consistently linked for weeks throughout the summer transfer window.

The Colombia international was even pictured making the ‘Irons’ gesture which got him sanctioned by Aston Villa.

While the failure of the transfer is likely due to Villa constantly changing the parameters of the deal [Sean Whetstone, 10 September], it feels as if after investing as much time chasing the attacker as they did, Steidten should have just met their demands.

There’s no doubt that the Hammers’ fans have been let down by the non-arrival of Duran and it’s strange to think about where West Ham could be with the Colombia international leading their line.

West Ham United needed to fight harder for Jhon Duran

Duran would have made a major difference to West Ham’s chances in the league this term and the club would’ve likely found themselves higher than where they’re currently placed.

The striker has managed to score four Premier League goals in just five games without a single start.

When comparing the 20-year-old’s form to that of Michail Antonio or Danny Ings, the quality of Steidten’s decision really comes into question.

The veteran pair have only managed to score one goal between them this term so not only does this show the difference in quality between the trio but it also shows how wrong Steidten was and how much he’s let the fans down.

A fee of £40million [James Nursey, 22 July] would’ve been all that was required to take Duran off of Unai Emery’s hands which may seem like a lot but, in reality, it’s just £13.5million more than what Niclas Fullkrug cost the club [Florian Plettenberg, 2 August].

Looking back now, it’s likely that Steidten regrets not sticking to his guns because things would have been far different for the Hammers at this moment in time.
