Jeff Stelling praises ‘Undervalued’ David Moyes for work at West Ham
Jeff Stelling believes David Moyes has proved a lot of people wrong after a sensational Premier League campaign with West Ham.
The Irons are one point away from clinching sixth place and a Europa League berth next season, a far cry from the mess they found themselves in last year when they narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.
Moyes has been the inspiration behind both, taking over in December 2019 and guiding them to safety before masterminding an assault on the top spots this season, with Champions League football a possibility until the last few weeks.
When asked by the Metro who had caught his eye this season, Sky Sports Soccer Saturday host Stelling was defiant on the Scot.
“David Moyes at West Ham,” he said.
“He has proved experience is an undervalued asset. Clubs want a bright young thing as their next manager but there’s David with all his experience, doing a good job.”
Doubters to believers
Moyes’ second incarnation at the London Stadium wasn’t greeted with much fanfare.
He was previously handed the reigns during the 2017/18 season when he was asked to put out the fire we found ourselves in and ensure Premier League survival.
Moyes did just that, with two games remaining of the season, but he was not offered a new deal and subsequently departed.
His style of play is one criticism often levelled at him and that is why large sections of Irons fans were not enamoured with his reappointment.
But we’ve been a thrilling watch in many games this season.
The attacking talents of Jesse Lingard and Jarrod Bowen have flourished under Moyes while Tomas Soucek has been a revelation alongside Declan Rice in midfield.
Moyes may not be the fashionable choice in the media but he should be nailed on for Manager of the Year after his feats this season.
Who needs a ‘bright young thing’ when the 58-year-old is still proving his worth.
In other West Ham news, reliable journalist claims Irons want to sign £17m-rated striker compared to Sadio Mane.
