Jason Cundy rounds on senior West Ham figure after Irons dumped out of cup
Jason Cundy has launched a withering critique of David Moyes after West Ham were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester United on Tuesday.
The Irons battled bravely amongst a spate of injuries to take the game the distance but that was not enough to spare them from the ire of talkSPORT pundit Cundy who tore into them following the loss.
Scott McTominay’s 97th-minute goal was enough to separate the sides at Old Trafford in a game shorn of quality with just five shots on target between the teams in 120 minutes of action.
Speaking on talkSPORT’s Sports Bar show [10pm, 09/02/21] Cundy detailed his disappointment at the West Ham manager, saying: “No Bruno [Fernandes], no [Edinson] Cavani, they were there for the taking.
“Simple as that. [Manchester] United were under-strength by some distance.”
He added: “Could Moyes have done more to win that game? I’m telling you he could’ve.”
Give some context, Cundy
That’s all well and good Jason, but have you stopped to consider the issues at hand for the Irons?
Michail Antonio was left out of the squad as Moyes continues to manage his workload as the only striker in the squad but apart from his absence the line-up was about as strong as it could get, with club captain Mark Noble coming in.
What Moyes did not foresee, however, was losing two of his three main centre-backs in the first 45 minutes.
After Angelo Ogbonna hobbled off barely a third of the way into the first half Issa Diop was called upon to make only his second appearance since December 16, but he too was withdrawn at the interval after suffering a suspected concussion.
Moyes turned to Ben Johnson and altered the Irons tactics to three at the back with full-backs Vladimir Coufal and Aaron Cresswell tucking in to support Craig Dawson.
With only one recognisable centre-back on the pitch and no proper forward surely it is hard to be too critical of Moyes given they largely fended off Manchester United and nearly forced a penalty shoot-out.
The hosts still had the mercurial talents of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in the side so it was not as if they were fielding a reserve line-up.
We think Cundy was a bit too strong on Moyes there.
