Jarrod Bowen faces possible World Cup snub as Gareth Southgate considers Marcus Rashford over West Ham United star

Jarrod Bowen could be set to miss out on Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad with Marcus Rashford preferred to the West Ham man, according to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinberg.

It’s been suggested that Rashford will be included as a striker, with a view to being cover on the left wing, which could mean there is no space for Bowen.

Leicester City’s in-form midfielder James Maddison is also facing a snub from the England boss, with Steinberg suggesting it will be a “surprise” if he is selected.

“Marcus Rashford, Ben White and Callum Wilson pushing for places in tomorrow’s England squad. Southgate expected to gamble on Walker and Phillips, but it will be a surprise if Maddison is selected for the World Cup,” he wrote (9 November).

“There is a sense that Southgate, who could have Luke Shaw as the only recognised left-back in his squad, is prepared to go with Kane, Wilson and Rashford as his central strikers.

“Rashford can also play off the left, meaning that there could be no room for the West Ham winger Jarrod Bowen, who has been involved in England’s past two squads.”

Huge blow

This will come as a big blow to Bowen, Particularly after he has been included in England’s last two squads. The 25-year-old was England’s most prolific wide man in the 2021/22 season and has perhaps been a victim of West Ham’s poor early season form.

Had he been playing for the likes of Newcastle, there’s a good chance he would’ve been called up to the squad like Callum Wilson looks set to be. Utilising Rashford over Bowen in a wide position is a bold move from Southgate, with the Manchester United man in good form whilst playing across the whole of the front line.

Bowen would’ve given Southgate more of a natural option to use on the left, with the West Ham man more capable of providing ammunition for the likes of Harry Kane in the box.

There is still a chance Bowen gets called up to the squad, and everyone at West Ham will be hoping Southgate does view Bowen as a viable option for the upcoming tournament.
