Jamie Carragher slams Emerson for what he did in West Ham United draw v Brentford
Jamie Carragher has slammed Emerson for an incident in the showdown between West Ham United and Brentford.
Julen Lopetegui’s side extended their winless run to five matches in all competitions with a 1-1 draw at The GTech Community Stadium on Saturday (28 September) thanks to Tomas Soucek’s second-half goal.
The Irons found themselves behind after just a minute when Byran Mbeumo volleyed home and Sky Sports pundit Carragher was quick to tear into Emerson for his slow start to the contest.
Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday (30 September) he said: “This is just about being alive and pace and energy.
“West Ham don’t look alive, especially the left-back there Emerson. He’s been done on the first run initially, Ajer puts the ball in and look at Emerson, he’s got to be closer, and he’s got to be aggressive.
“Again, they win the second ball and look how alive [Fabio] Carvalho is and listen you still need the great finish.”
What has happened to Emerson at West Ham United and the London Stadium?
While he has been one of the Hammers’ better players over the last couple of years, Emerson has had a major problem when it comes to switching off early on in games or even just being a bit too slow to react in matches.
Although the Italian is not alone in being at fault for Brentford’s opener on Saturday, he is far too easily beaten in the first phase of play and then way too passive as the ball comes back across the penalty area moments later.
Of course, the majority of the blame will be levelled at Lopetegui and questions will be asked about whether or not he set up the team in the right way, but the players simply have to shoulder some of the burden as well.
Hopefully, West Ham will make it past the first minute without conceding when they face Ipswich Town on Saturday (5 October). Both the Irons and Lopetegui desperately need that first home win of the Premier League campaign.
