Jamie Carragher shares why he snubbed West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta in Premier League team of the season

Jamie Carragher has shared that he’s chosen Chelsea’s Cole Palmer over West Ham United star Lucas Paqueta in his Premier League Team of the Season so far because of a recent performance.

The Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend took to his personal Twitter account (January 4) and responded to questions about why he did not pick the Brazilian in his team and admitted that he had to pick Palmer over him because of what he did in Chelsea’s 3-2 win over Luton Town.

Carragher shared his Team of the Season live on Sky Sports along with Gary Neville which included Paqueta’s teammate Jarrod Bowen after 11 goals and two assists so far this campaign.

Carragher explained: “It was him or Palmer! Maybe recency bias but after Palmer’s performance at Luton I went for him!”

Difficult decision

There’s no doubt that Paqueta has been absolutely sublime so far this season with two goals and five assists so far this season in what’s been an excellent half-season for West Ham United.

The Brazilian has stunningly formed a formidable trio with Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus and his influence was made all the more clear when he missed their latest game against Brighton, an encounter which lacked his imagination and class in the final third.

West Ham

However, Carragher shared that he’s based his decisions on players who have been in different circumstances but have excelled and if any fan is picking their TOTS, Chelsea’s Palmer must be high on the list.

Amidst all the struggles at the West London club under Mauricio Pochettino, Palmer has exceptionally excelled and on the evidence of his reasoning and the Englishman’s contributions (eight goals, and four assists) this season, Carragher’s decision is justified.

However, Paqueta is in a league on his own and West Ham United fans may also share this viewpoint.
