Jamie Carragher shares David Moyes sack verdict amid West Ham United 2-2 draw v Arsenal

Jamie Carragher feels it would be a mistake for West Ham to part ways with David Moyes at the end of the season because he can get them battling for Europe again.

The Hammers fought back from 2-0 down against the Gunners following some “really poor” defending to earn a 2-2 draw and move four points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand on the teams around them.

But speaking before the game, Carragher told Sky Sports (16 April) that he felt the speculation around Moyes’ future was madness because he is still a top Premier League manager and one bad season shouldn’t see him sacked.

“The end of the season will determine whether they are vindicated in keeping David Moyes,” he said.

“I think that is the right decision. I think he’s a top premier League manager.

“There’s talk that even at the end of the season they might just part ways, I think that would be a mistake, I really do.

“I always look at West Ham and they’re very similar to Everton in terms of, they’re one of those teams who are trying to jump and mix with the big boys at the top and it’s difficult.

“You can only quite get to sixth and still it’s a great season.

“If I was a West Ham owner or a fan I just think I’d want David Moyes to do what he did at Everton for ten years. He won’t do that long here, they change managers a lot more, but the idea that just because West Ham have had a poor season means you have to get rid of David Moyes, no.

“He’s been brilliant for West Ham. It hasn’t quite been as well as they would have liked this season.

“They might still go on and win a European Cup, which would be amazing for the supporters, and they had the odd season like that down at Everton.

“Then they go back to being what they were, which is fighting for European places. And I think West Ham can do that again next season.

“So I would keep David Moyes in for next season.”

West Ham

Not true

Carragher’s comments reek of someone who doesn’t watch West Ham on a regular basis and is judging his opinion based of what he knows of the manager previously.

Moyes’ reputation is excellent and he has earned that, but his performance as manager of this club over the last 18 months hasn’t been anywhere near good enough.

The bad things last year were overlooked because of the run to the Europa League semi-final and this year has been poor from top to bottom, with awful results, performances and no player improvement.

The summer would be a great chance for the board to move on from Moyes and try to go in a different direction to be more attacking and push up the table.

Moyes did a great job initially and took us as far as he could have taken us. Now it’s time for someone else to take over and take us further.
