Jamie Carragher reacts as West Ham United confirm David Moyes exit

Jamie Carragher has reacted to West Ham United confirming that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season.

The club announced on Monday (6 May) that the manager will leave by mutual consent when his deal expires, with Julen Lopetegui expected to take over for the 2024/25 season.

And when asked for his verdict while live on Sky’s Monday Night Football (6 May), the Liverpool legend believes it’s the right decision for all involved and tipped him to return to the Premier League eventually.

“I think it’s a great decision all round, for everybody,” he said. “I think I said that on the show a few months ago.

“I think what it does now is it gives the West Ham fans the chance in the next home game, to really send him off with a salute that he thoroughly deserves.

“You’ve got to go back I think 1980 under John Lyall, he was the manager when they won the FA Cup, and in 1986 when they came third as well. You think about how long ago that is, he’s been West Ham’s best manager.

“To win a European trophy I think is pretty special, and he deserved that as well for his managerial career not just what he did at West Ham. He’s been a top Premier League manager.

“I think he’ll be back in the Premier League soon enough, at some point next season or the year after because he knows how to, basically navigate a Premier League season.

“But I think it’s right all round. I can understand some of the frustrations from the supporters about the style of football at times, I get that, but result wise he’s done a brilliant job for West Ham.”

Thank you David Moyes

It’s been coming for a while now with fans growing frustrated at the style of football and some poor results, but that doesn’t take away from how good Moyes has been.

In four-and-a-half seasons at the club he has taken the Hammers away from battling relegation at the bottom to playing European football in three consecutive seasons, and even winning the Europa Conference League in 2022/23.

With one more home game to go in his tenure, the decision to announce his exit now makes all the sense in the world and gives the fans a chance to say goodbye properly.

He deserves to get a heroes send off at the London Stadium, and the fans will get behind him and the team to try and ensure his tenure ends with three points.

His time in east London has come to an end, but his managerial career is far from over and someone else’s fan base will start to love him in the not-too-distant future because he’s great at what he does.
