Jamie Carragher reacts as West Ham United close to Julen Lopetegui deal to replace David Moyes

Jamie Carragher has praised West Ham United for their imminent appointment of Julen Lopetegui to replace David Moyes.

The Hammers confirmed that current boss Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season (6 May), with Lopetegui expected to be his replacement after agreeing a deal to become the new head coach at the London Stadium.

And when asked for his verdict on the expected appointment while on Sky Sports Monday Night Football (6 May, 18:37), Carragher admitted that he is a big fan of the Spaniard and thinks it is a “really good appointment”.

“Well he was fantastic at Wolves, he did a brilliant job, and I thought we would see him in the Premier League sooner, certainly earlier than next season,” he said.

“But when you think about he managed Real Madrid, he managed Spain, he’s had great success in Spain with other clubs as well, I think it’s a really good appointment. I think it’s really exciting for West Ham.”

West Ham should be excited about Julen Lopetegui

Moyes leaving the London Stadium is a sad day because of everything he achieved, but it’s the right decision for the club and most know that.

It makes the replacement all the more important however, and Lopetegui is someone who should really fit the bill as to what supporters want to see going forward.

He likes to play attacking football with possession, but is adaptable enough to avoid getting hammered by top teams and knows that sometimes being pragmatic is necessary.

His managerial record everywhere has been exceptional and now he comes to east London with money to spend this summer and a squad needing to be reshaped in his image.

It’s going to be an exciting summer for Irons fans, and Lopetegui is someone who should be seen as a strong start to an important summer of change for the club.

In other West Ham news, Liverpool have been tipped to pay the release clause of one Irons star if there is a Saudi twist at Anfield this summer.
