Jamie Carragher predicts result of West Ham United Carabao Cup clash v Arsenal

Jamie Carragher has predicted that West Ham United will end their four-match winless run when they face Arsenal in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday 1 November.

David Moyes’ side have lost each of their last three matches in all competitions heading into their fourth-round clash with the Gunners, but Carragher believes that the Irons will take advantage of a changed Arsenal to come out on top after a penalty shootout.

Mikel Arteta’s side have only lost once so far this season and bypassed Brentford in the third round thanks Reiss Nelson’s early strike and Carragher believes that the result could well come down to which side makes the most changes at the London Stadium.

West Ham

Writing in his EFL predictions, he said: “This one’s a big one. It depends on what teams get put out because I’m not sure the changes West Ham will make with them being in the Europa League as well.

“I’m going to go for West Ham on penalties. I think it’ll be a really tight game and Arsenal will make a few changes.”

Opportunity

Pressure is beginning to mount on Moyes at the London Stadium after a recent poor run of results both domestically and in the Europa League and the Carabao Cup could well offer the Hammers and their manager the opportunity to ease the calls for his sacking.

The Irons’ Europa League defeat to Olympiacos showed that if Moyes does make changes, his team don’t have the strength in depth to continue to pick up results when their star players are rested on the bench. If he wants to progress in the League Cup, the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen will have to start.

West Ham

A good Carabao Cup run will lift the otherwise dreary mood at the London Stadium and should the Irons match Carragher’s prediction, they will only be two rounds away from the final at Wembley and an opportunity for another piece of silverware under Moyes’ leadership.

Arteta’s side will provide a huge test for the Irons, but should the Gunners make plenty of changes West Ham will fancy their chances of getting a result. But if the Hammers lose to a much changes side, it will only increase the calls for Moyes’ sacking in East London.
