Jacob Steinberg slams Julen Lopetegui with comparison after West Ham United lost 3-0 v Chelsea
Jacob Steinberg slammed Julen Lopetegui in an angry rant by comparing him to former West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini after their 3-0 loss against Chelsea.
The Guardian journalist took to X on 21 September and shared he has “no idea” what the Spaniard is trying to do with his squad.
This loss against the Blues is now West Ham’s third of the Premier League season with the club currently having no end to their poor run of form in sight.
In two separate posts, Steinberg wrote: “This is like watching the worst of Pellegrini” as well as “No idea what Lopetegui is trying to do. There was some guy who claimed he was one of the top managers in Europe”.

The summer transfer window was one that initially filled Hammers fans with excitement due to the sheer amount of quality that was brought in.
Perhaps the most interesting arrival of the bunch, however, was Jean Clair-Todibo. The Frenchman was involved in a massive transfer saga with both West Ham and Juventus [GiveMeSport, 5 August] across the window.
While the centre-back was expected to help further solidify West Ham’s defensive lines alongside Max Kilman, he hasn’t yet started a Premier League game.
Instead, Konstantinos Mavropanos has been chosen to start over the 24-year-old despite weeks of poor performance with Tom Rennie even calling for the centre-back to be axed for their last top-flight clash against Fulham [Tom Rennie, 14 September].
Last season the Greek international played a part in the Hammers having the fourth-worst defensive record in the league and yet the Spaniard is still starting him.
If Lopetegui doesn’t change up his defensive line or find a team that clicks soon, it could result in the premature end of his tenure.
