Jacob Steinberg provides West Ham FFP update over permanent Kalvin Phillips transfer from Manchester City

West Ham United will take their financial fair play position into account when deciding on a permanent deal for Kalvin Phillips, according to Jacob Steinberg.

The Guardian journalist reported on its website on Tuesday (23 January) that talks over a buy-option being included in the England international’s loan deal remain ongoing after the midfielder agreed to move to the London Stadium until the end of the campaign.

David Moyes’ side will cover the entirety of Phillips’ £140,000 a week wages but will consider their FFP position when they decide whether or not to make the Manchester City midfielder’s stay in East London permanent at the end of the campaign, Steinberg reported.

Better to be safe

The Premier League have shown in recent weeks and months that they are not messing about when it comes to punishing breaches of its profit and sustainability rules. Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have been recently charged for allegedly flouting the regulations.

Everton have already been deducted 10 points this season after being found guilty of a separate breach, a punishment they have appealed against. Such financial problems can prove to be incredibly costly in the long run and the Irons have to avoid such a punishment.

West Ham

If Phillips impresses during his loan spell at the London Stadium, the Hammers will likely find a way to balance the books and secure his services for next season. But if he struggles to adapt, they won’t have the financial commitment of definitely having to buy him.

Ultimately, the ball is entirely in West Ham’s court. A lot can change in six months of football, but the Hammers are in an excellent position to add an incredibly talented midfielder to their ranks for a long time yet.
