‘In hindsight…’ – Moyes admits team selection mistake after West Ham v Brighton

David Moyes has admitted that he made an error with his team selection as West Ham drew 2-2 with Brighton on Sunday.

Moyes started with a three-man midfield as he sacrificed attacking players as Andriy Yarmolenko, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma all started on the bench.

Sebastien Haller and Jarrod Bowen were the only attacking players to start the game as the Hammers struggled in the first half against the Seagulls.

Speaking after the game, Moyes is quoted by Football.London as saying, “In hindsight, it was not the right decision.

“I wanted Jarrod and Seb up front at the start, hoping they’d give us something. We are trying to find a solution to losing Micky Antonio and Arthur Masuaku.

“We are trying to find that. Even Arthur, for the balance, as well as Micky, we are missing them both.”

Ben Johnson and Tomas Soucek scored the goals that secured a point for the Hammers after Moyes made some attacking subs in the second half.

Lanzini and Yarmolenko came on at half time to add some attacking impetus to the Hammers and this worked wonders as Lanzini assisted Johnson’s goal.

Of course, all of this has been said in hindsight but it does look incredibly naive from Moyes as he looked as if he was setting up to defend against relegation-threatened Brighton.

Hopefully, he doesn’t make this mistake again in future games as Moyes’ decision looks to have cost his side on a day where they should’ve easily won.

Michail Antonio should be back available soon so the Irons can revert to having him as a focal point in their team.

West Ham haven’t missed Antonio too much but his absence was extremely noticeable against the Seagulls.
