Harry Redknapp says West Ham need a striker in January

Former West Ham boss Harry Redknapp believes the Hammers need to sign a new striker in January to help take the load off ‘tired’ Michail Antonio.

Antonio started the season on fire for the Hammers, scoring five times in the first six league games but has since scored just once in their last nine games in all competitions.

As the only striker option at the club, David Moyes has been forced to rely on the Jamaica international to lead the line and that could explain why his form has dropped off so much recently.

Redknapp was speaking on talkSPORT when he said that he thinks the Hammers are short on options upfront and that Antonio is tired.

“They are a little bit short upfront,” he said. “Antonio, he has to do it every week and if he gets an injury.

“He looked a bit jaded and a bit tired the other week. They have no-one who they can chop around. Bowen can play through the middle.

“But I think they may look to get another striker perhaps in the window.”

Wanted

Antonio is without a doubt the best forward player at the club but with European football and international football now on his plate, the 31-year-old needs a break.

Andriy Yarmolenko is also able to play up front but he seems to be out of Moyes’ plans right now, so a new signing would be a great boost for his options.

Not only would it give Moyes an added option, but it would provide competition for Antonio too.

Added competition is never a bad thing in a squad that wants to be competing for honours and that’s where West Ham find themselves right now.

There seem to be targets, but whether a deal can be done or not is yet to be known. It’s clear that Antonio is tired and needs a rest though, so they should be prioritising that deal ahead of anything else.
