Harry Redknapp and Micah Richards react to West Ham-Manchester City League Cup draw

Carlton Cole has adopted a more pessimistic approach than Harry Redknapp to learning that Manchester City await West Ham in the next round of the League Cup.

West Ham stunned Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night to advance into the last 16 of the competition, where they will face Pep Guardiola’s side at the London Stadium.

Ex-Irons boss Redknapp conducted the draw alongside Micah Richards live on Sky Sports after the win over the Red Devils, and both offered their verdict on next month’s tie between West Ham and Manchester City.

“Ooooh, lovely,” Richards exclaimed.

Redknapp: “Don’t worry, the Hammers are home. Take the beating.

“What a game, that will be exciting.

“West Ham are in great form and they’ll give Man City a real game, that’s for sure.”

Cole, however, speaking on the same channel, adopted a more cautious approach.

“Knocked me right off my perch, I was really on a high,” he said. “All of a sudden I saw that… I don’t agree with Harry Redknapp, he said it’s going to be an entertaining game, but it isn’t. It’s going to be a hard game, that’s what it’s going to be.”

As tough as they get

David Moyes must be ruing his luck.

A trip to Old Trafford was daunting enough, but he must be exasperated with a tie against Manchester City as his reward for beating the Red Devils.

Liverpool and Chelsea are still standing in the competition, but a clash against a side that have lifted the trophy for the last four years is a formidable prospect.

In fact, City have won it in six of the last eight seasons to draw level with Liverpool’s as the competition’s most successful club.

It will be tough for the Irons, but at least the game will be in home comforts, and they can take heart in the fact that the last meeting between the two in East London ended in a 1-1 draw [October 2020].
