Graham Potter twist: West Ham make new move, deal close

West Ham United have had “positive further talks” with Graham Potter about him becoming their new head coach, according to Rob Dorsett.

The former Chelsea boss has been linked with a return to football for some time now with both Everton and the Hammers interested in acquiring his services.

Talks had reportedly stalled earlier in the day on Tuesday (7 January) due to the length of the contract he was being offered.

But, speaking live on Sky Sports (7 January), journalist Dorsett shared a fresh update on the Hammers’ pursuit of Potter.

“Look, this is significant information that I have been given in the last half an hour or so,” Dorsett said.

“And I can tell you that Graham Potter is closing in on a return to football more than 18 months after he was sacked by Chelsea and he’s getting closer and closer to becoming the West Ham coach.

“There have been positive further talks between Graham Potter and West Ham officials this afternoon and into this evening.

“There is optimism on both sides that a deal can be done and there is still some contractual detail to be agreed, but it is very possible that Graham Potter could be in charge of the West Ham side for their next match.”

Graham Potter is perfect for West Ham United

It now seems that despite not yet being sacked from his role, Julen Lopetegui seems set to be relieved of his duties as West Ham boss.

The Spaniard has the Hammers sitting 14th in the Premier League and while that might not seem all that bad, when the fact they spent over £100million in the summer is taken into account, it proves how poor they’ve been.

The former Wolves boss’ tactics were just too similar to that of David Moyes’ and even though their set-ups were more or less the same, the Scotsman somehow managed to get more out of his players than Lopetegui did.

Of course, the Spaniard’s exit has been mooted for some time now and even though he has earned the odd three points here and there, he’s just not quite up to the standards David Sullivan needs him to be.

Potter, on the other hand, has a much more free-flowing style of play and it feels like he could get the most out of the Irons upon his arrival, which, is the least that fans deserve.
