Graham Potter ‘second thoughts’ on West Ham job emerges as ‘fallacy’ exposed

Graham Potter is already under pressure at West Ham United despite only taking charge as their head coach in January.

West Ham extended their winless run in the Premier League to seven games with a 3-2 defeat against Brighton on Saturday (26 April).

With only four matches left, the Irons find themselves stuck at 17th place and are fortunate that three teams have already been confirmed to be relegated.

Therefore, there are increasing question marks around Potter’s ability to lead the East London outfit forward ahead of the summer.

Daniel Storey sheds light on Potter future

Reflecting on yet another disappointing result for West Ham at the weekend, Daniel Storey insisted that Potter should have second thoughts about accepting the job at the London Stadium.

The journalist also reminded the English tactician that the Hammers managerial job is an ‘enormous’ task, considering the size of the club.

“This is an enormous task”, Storey wrote on The i website (28 April).

“I don’t know if Potter is having second thoughts yet about taking the project on, but it would be more odd if he isn’t.”

Storey went on to describe Potter’s stint at the London Stadium so far as ‘horrendous’, claiming that the Irons have been on ‘relegation form’ under him.

“The start has been horrendous – let’s not try and dress it up as anything else”, he added.

“West Ham have taken 10 points from 13 matches, relegation form in any normal Premier League season.”

The journalist also rubbished suggestions that the 49-year-old is still running the rule over West Ham before kick-starting next season as a ‘fallacy’.

He believes Potter is already under pressure at the East London club, hinting the possibility of a sack if he does not start next season on the front foot.

“The notion that a manager comes in and spends four months working out what doesn’t work before starting his first full season with a blank canvas is a fallacy”, Storey wrote.

“We already know that Potter is struggling because the pitiful results tell us as much. That leaves him under pressure to start next season quickly.

“And that’s why most managers prefer to take jobs in June rather than January.”

Potter under pressure at West Ham

David Sullivan will certainly be keeping tabs on Potter’s progress at West Ham, particularly after an unimpressive start to his spell.

However, the former Chelsea boss is unlikely to face the threat of a sack this summer.

The London-based club appear to be prepared to back Potter for the time being, especially since they allowed him to bring in Kyle Macaulay as their new head of recruitment.

Potter will be keen to strengthen his squad significantly after making Evan Ferguson his only signing in the winter transfer window.
