Gary Neville, Micah Richards admit West Ham get lucky against Manchester City

Gary Neville and Micah Richards have agreed that West Ham got slightly lucky in the match against Manchester City.

In the first half of the contest at the London Stadium on Sunday (May 15), the Citizens were denied a penalty claim when Gabriel Jesus went down under a challenge from Kurt Zouma.

While commentating on the match, Neville was quoted by Daily Mail as saying: “I think that is a penalty. That was clumsy from Zouma.”

The sentiment was echoed by former Manchester City defender Richards during the half-time.

“It’s a definite penalty,” he said while sitting in the Sky Sports Studio. “I don’t know what they’re (VAR) doing.”

Important point

The result was a good one for West Ham, who despite leading with two goals at the half-time, could have easily lost the game to the table toppers.

David Moyes’ men were cruising at the halfway stage, a courtesy brace from Jarrod Bowen but the reigning champions fought back with a second-half strike from Jack Grealish and an own goal from Vladimír Coufal.

The Hammers would be thankful to goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski who saved an 86th-minute penalty from City’s star winger Riyad Mahrez to keep the score level and helped the team in staying alive for a place in the Europa League.

West Ham are placed in the seventh position of the league table with 56 points, two behind sixth-placed Manchester United.

Therefore, for the London-based club to qualify for the Europa League next season, they must win their last match against Brighton & Hove Albion on May 22 and hope that United won’t get anything out of their final outing against Crystal Palace.
