Gary Neville lauds David Moyes in Sky Sports manager of year discussion

Gary Neville has applauded West Ham boss David Moyes and considers him to be one of the best managers in the Premier League this season.

The Sky Sports pundit has shared his top five managers of the season, and recognised the good work Moyes has done to take West Ham up to fifth place in the table.

Neville opted for Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel as his pick of the bunch but was keen to point out Moyes’ success, unlike Jamie Carragher.

Neville told Sky Sports, “Brendan Rodgers has done brilliantly and you do have to balance off the budget and the players these managers have.

“Rodgers and Sean Dyche are exceptional managerial performances – and David Moyes at West Ham has been exceptional too.

“But I would still go with Guardiola or Tuchel because to win the Champions League and the league in the same season takes some doing.”

Got to be number one

Moyes has been vastly underappreciated this season and although the likes of Tuchel and Guardiola deserve praise, Moyes has to be number one for us.

He took over in dire circumstances with morale at an all-time low on and off the pitch, both for the players and the fanbase, with protests against the board taking place prior to the pandemic.

But he has since galvanised the club and united everyone – that in itself is an extraordinary achievement.

And this season he added to that with excellent signings in Vladimir Coufal, Craig Dawson Jesse Lingard, while also getting the best out of Declan Rice and Michail Antonio.

Moyes has improved every single player and taken West Ham from battling relegation to challenging for the Champions League.

We question whether Guardiola would be able to work his magic with the same set of players, on the same limited budget.

The Scot deserves to be recognised for the brilliant work he has done, and winning the manager of the year would be a fitting reward.
