Gary Neville holds hands up, admits he got things wrong about West Ham ace Declan Rice

Gary Neville has admitted that he got a lot of things wrong about West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice after interviewing him on the OverLap.

The England international midfielder, 23, has blown his critics away with his performances on the pitch for both club and country over the last two seasons, and Neville took to personal LinkedIn account on Friday to shower praise on him.

Rice is an excellent footballer, but he is even an ever better person, and it appears the Sky Sports pundit is just discovering a lot about him following the tete-a-tete.

Neville posted thus as his Thought of the Week: “Don’t go too early.”

“This is something that I often say to myself in punditry.

“You form a view on something either in haste or we always tell ourselves sayings like “trust your first instincts“, “I knew I didn’t like them after 5 mins”.

“However, I interviewed Declan Rice this week for the overlap and I judged him as a young player at West Ham.

“I have to say I got it completely wrong. What an outstanding young person.

“Authoritative, confident, humble and quite simply the most impressive young footballer I’ve interviewed in 11 years.”

“He’s also a fantastic talent and I went too early!”

Not surprising

West Ham fans will be the least surprised with Neville’s admission given their knowledge of the star.

While most other fans from other Premier League clubs still have doubts, the Hammers faithful have known of Rice’s talents since his days in the academy, and they always knew he was going to become such a huge player.

It is not everytime that pundits change their mind and admit being wrong about holding an opinion about a player, and Neville has done the right thing by holding his hands up.

He is definitely not the only one who had a different idea about who the West Ham ace is, and hopefully, many more can be won over.

Rice is gradually becoming the best in his position in the Premier League, and he is not even anywhere his peak yet.

There is still much more to come from the Hammers academy graduate, and not many would be surprised if he ends up becoming one of the very best players on the planet very soon.
