Gary Neville drops Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay Manchester United to West Ham United verdict
Gary Neville believes Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay would be “fantastic” signings for West Ham this summer but doesn’t expect them to happen.
The Hammers have seen bids knocked back for both Manchester United players, with David Moyes keen to bolster his squad with the England and Scotland internationals before the transfer window closes.
But Neville, speaking on The Overlap (8 August), admitted he doesn’t imagine Maguire would want to move to the London Stadium while also claiming that Erik Ten Hag shouldn’t sell McTominay this summer with the Red Devils looking to compete in all four competitions again.
“West Ham were linked with McTominay and Maguire weren’t they?” Neville said.
“I don’t think Harry will go there to be honest with you but if they were to get those two players, not saying they’re going to replace Declan Rice but in terms of strength, personality, performance levels.
“I know people will mock what’s happening with Harry at the moment but he’s a bloody good defender and for West Ham he’d be a fantastic signing. I think for McTominay, at times over the last three or four years I’ve said, I’ve watched him. He’s not Declan Rice, he’s not too far away from him in terms of profile. He’s a similar type of player.
“So if they get those two players in they could have a good season but they need a couple of signings like that desperately.
“I wouldn’t sell McTominay if I was United anyway. The fact that Ten Hag attacks all competitions and they will need him in competitions, so I wouldn’t sell him personally.”
Push
West Ham know that they’re running out of time to get deals done and there is money to spend, so they’re attacking the market now.
Maguire and McTominay would both be good, solid additions to the Hammers squad and would provide added quality and better starting options than we currently have.

Rice is obviously going to be incredibly difficult to replace but by adding the energy and Premier League nous of McTominay alongside the quality and aggression of Edson Alvarez and there isn’t much more they could do in one transfer window.
As for Maguire he is a leader who plays the exact way Moyes loves his defenders to play, and if a double deal is there to be done then it would be perfect for West Ham.
Time is ticking and the cash is there, so even if we’re forced to slightly overpay to get them done most fans would be happy to see them brought in so it’s decision time for those at the club.
