Gary Lineker fires idiot jibe after Alan Shearer makes West Ham United point

Gary Lineker felt obliged to call himself an “idiot” after Alan Shearer reminded him of West Ham United’s display against Ipswich Town on Saturday (5 October).

Speaking on The Rest is Football [7 October, 41:16], Lineker appeared to forget the Hammers when discussing the Premier League matches, to which Shearer brought up the 4-1 win.

The duo, alongside Micah Richards, took plenty of amusement from the situation as “performances of the week” were debated.

Lineker began by saying: “I think we should end on the performance of the week from Brentford.”

Shearer interjected: “Don’t forget West Ham!”

Lineker immediately acknowledged his slip by relaying: “Sorry… I think we should finish today by talking about the two performances of the week – how did I miss out West Ham? What an idiot.”

West Ham United superb against Ipswich Town

It has been a rocky start for the Hammers, but Julen Lopetegui will have slept a lot more easily on after securing a convincing first home win.

His team were bold in attack from the off and put Ipswich Town to the sword. They trusted in their own ability to challenge the visitors to attempt to go toe-to-toe, or they would be dominated – and that is exactly what happened.

A ruthless performance with four goals and a defensive improvement – bar Liam Delap’s early equaliser, to which you would have forgiven Irons fans for wondering ‘here we go again’ – showed a different side to Lopetegui’s men which had previously been dormant.

Just before the international break has turned out to be the perfect time to secure the win, having been beaten by Manchester City prior to last month’s fortnight hiatus from the Premier League.

There are some difficult games within close proximity for the Hammers, who must remain grounded – next up is a short trip to Tottenham, against whom Lopetegui’s attackers may fancy their chances after witnessing their capitulation at the hands of Brighton on Sunday (6 October).
