Gary Lineker ‘cannot believe’ Craig Dawson’s goal stood for West Ham

Gary Lineker ‘cannot believe’ that West Ham defender Craig Dawson’s late equaliser v Leicester counted yesterday (February 13).

The late goal came off the Hammers defenders’ arm, but new rules from last season meant that it counted, nonetheless.

Dawson told Sky Sports after the game: “I was slightly worried, but it counted and that’s all that matters. It’s something we work hard on. It was a fair point for us today.”

Lineker wrote on his personal Twitter: “Still cannot believe it wasn’t given as handball,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.

“Dawson knew it went in off his arm by his reaction in the post match interview. One of those spells where everything is going wrong.”

It doesn’t matter how they are scored or whether the goal should have counted or not, as long as it counted and West Ham rescued the point.

It was very disappointing to come away with a point, but the nature of the last-minute goal softens the blow slightly.

The Irons could have run away with the game in the first half and maybe should have been more clinical in possession and in front of goal.

There was no doubt over their penalty, it was a stupid decision from Aaron Cresswell that allowed the Foxes to get back into the game.

Although a point is better than none, the Irons didn’t lose and despite it not being a win the Hammers are hopefully one point closer to their Champions League finish.

The failure to capitalise on Manchester United’s draw with Southampton has left them with a harder task though.

Arsenal now sit just two points off David Moyes’ side with three games in hand. West Ham will have to rely on those around them dropping points but all they can do is pick up as many points as possible.
