Friedkin Group explore West Ham United takeover as update emerges

The Friedkin Group previously explored the possibility of purchasing West Ham before their potential Everton takeover, according to iNews.

The online source reported [18 June] that the American Group, overseen by AS Roma owner Dan Friedkin, considered buying the Hammers and at least one Championship club to add to their growing empire.

David Sullivan, who owns a 38.8 per cent share at the London Stadium, has no desire to sell any shares in the club and is not expecting a change in the current ownership split, however. [Daily Mail]

While there are very mixed reviews over Sullivan’s ownership at the London Stadium, it does not seem like there will be any changes in the current split anytime soon.

Daniel Kretinsky holds the second-largest share with 27 per cent, though he has little to do with the decision-making for the Irons – Sullivan is very hands-on.

While investment is key for a football club to run, the Hammers have shown over the last few seasons that they can be successful in their current state, having lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and qualified for Europe three seasons in a row.

Of course, there was a disappointing end to David Moyes’ tenure recently, with the club missing out on European qualification as they finished ninth in the Premier League, though there is excitement that Julen Lopetegui could restore that next season.

Considering the Friedkin Group’s experience with AS Roma in Serie A, their expertise could have been a decent addition at the London Stadium, but it seems likely they will now become involved with the Toffees at Goodison Park instead.

In other West Ham news, the club are interested in signing Jon Dagur Thornsteinsson as an ownership twist emerges.
