Freddie Potts West Ham recall update shared by John Mousinho
John Mousinho has confirmed that West Ham United youngster Freddie Potts will spend the rest of the 2024/25 season with Portsmouth after a recall deadline passed this month.
Rumours have recently emerged about whether the midfielder could be recalled due to the issues the Hammers have been suffering in the centre of the park this term.
The youngster has been one of Pompey’s best players and realistically staying at Fratton Park is likely the best thing for him at this point in his career.
And, speaking to The News Portsmouth (23 January), Mousinho confirmed that the deadline for Graham Potter to recall the 21-year-old had already passed.
“The loan deadline was the 14th, so Freddie is with us for the season,” he said.
“We were always speaking to West Ham and they never said anything about wanting to recall him – and we were obviously aware of that.
“We have really good contacts with all the loan clubs we do take players from and we like to think that should there ever be a sniff of a recall then they will let us know.
“It happens, these clubs own the players, it’s well within their rights to be able to do that. But we had good communication with them throughout.
“Hopefully from West Ham’s point of view, they will look at it and see how well Freddie has done this year and think this is the right place for him.”
Freddie Potts not being recalled by West Ham United is a good thing
Even though West Ham are in dire need of midfield reinforcement, it feels like recalling Potts would have been a mistake.
While the youngster has excelled at Fratton Park this season, it still feels like it’s too soon for him to be thrown into Premier League action.
Indeed, some of the assists he’s made this season will have no doubt piqued the interest of Hammers fans but if they want him to become the new Declan Rice, he needs some more time to develop.
However, the fact that Potts is staying with Pompey could mean that the future of Guido Rodriguez lies at the London Stadium despite the continuous links with a return to Real Betis.

Of course, this isn’t the end of the world but with some of the form he’s shown this season, it feels like Potter needs some reinforcement if he wants to get the Hammers out of their rut.
Only time will tell what the future holds but for now, it seems that he’s going to have to work with what he’s got.
