Freddie Potts sends two-word message as West Ham United gem seals new transfer

Freddie Potts has sent a message to Jacob Knightbridge after the goalkeeper sealed a move to Oxford United on Wednesday (12 June).

The 20-year-old spent 13 years at the London Stadium, developing through the club’s youth levels, joining The U’s before he could make a senior debut for the Hammers. [Oxford United]

Like Knightbridge, Potts has struggled to break into the first-team set-up, making just three senior appearances, but impressed during his loan spell at Wycombe Wanderers this season.

Following the news that the shot-stopper had put pen to paper on a permanent move to Oxford City, Potts shared the news via Instagram on Wednesday (12 June), writing: “Congratulations, mate.”

It is a real shame that Knightbridge was unable to make his senior debut for the Hammers after 13 years at the club, but not all dreams can come true for footballers.

Potts, on the other hand, could very much stake a claim in Julen Lopetegui’s squad next season following a rather impressive season-long loan at Adams Park.

The 20-year-old made 43 appearances in all competitions as Wycombe solidified a mid-table spot in League One and reached the EFL Trophy final, losing 2-1 to Peterborough in a dramatic final few minutes at Wembley Stadium.

Of course, the youngster’s limited experience could be a concern to Lopetegui, though he should certainly be considered for a spot in the first team after his season on loan.

With Edson Alvarez currently the only natural defensive midfielder in the squad, with James Ward-Prowse and Tomas Soucek filling the role next to him, Potts could be a simple answer to the midfield question.

West Ham are very likely to re-enter the transfer market a few times after sealing Palmeiras’ Luis Guilherme as their first signing of the summer, but Potts should be a player that sticks around next season.
