Flynn Downes to quit West Ham United as David Moyes sack decision made

It’s been a tough season for Flynn Downes at West Ham United – and things could have been made harder after a decision was made on David Moyes’ future.

The 24-year-old Hammers fan made 21 appearances during the 2022/23 season, however, only a handful of them were from the outset.

He certainly would have expected more after making a big-money move to the London Stadium last summer. It’s believed the Hammers landed Downes for £12million. It’s looking like a failed move for both parties at present.

West Ham

So much so, that Downes has been heavily linked with a move away from the London Stadium. According to ExWHUemployee, Southampton have taken a liking to the 24-year-old, with Russell Martin keen to reunite himself with Downes – having previously managed him at Swansea.

With Moyes now set to remain at the London Stadium (BBC Sport, 12 June), Downes won’t be given many chances to impress.

West Ham

The Scot has his favourites and, unfortunately, the former Swansea man isn’t one. Tomas Soucek will likely be a big part of West Ham’s plans after the departure of Declan Rice.

When Rice does leave, the Hammers are almost certainly going to look to sign one or two quality midfield players. The England star needs adequately replacing. It’s going to be a tough task for the board, but it’s one they cannot get wrong.

West Ham are likely to muster a big fee for their star man with Manchester City also looking to land Rice. A bidding war is what David Sullivan wanted and it’s exactly what he’s going to get.
