Finance expert drops ‘overpriced’ Declan Rice Manchester City verdict as West Ham United agreement reached
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire believes Manchester City felt West Ham United’s valuation of Declan Rice was “overpriced”.
Sky Sports reported on 28 June that the Hammers have agreed a £105million deal with the Gunners who are now closing in on their number one target.
Talking on Sky Sports News on Thursday 29 June Maguire has suggested City are prepared to pull out of deals they deem to be too high.
“I don’t think so [nothing to look at]. When we take a look at Manchester City’s strategy over the last few years they have been competitive but they have a very definitive price as to what they’re prepared to pay.
“They pulled out of the Harry Maguire, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marc Cucurella and others who have done to other clubs because City feel that in their view the players were being overpriced.
“It could be in their perception in regards to the Declan Rice fee which is estimated to be around £105million.”
About right
It’s important to consider just how much Mikel Arteta and Arsenal wanted to get this deal over the line.
The 24-year-old has always been at the top of the Gunners’ wishlist. He’s worth more than £105million to West Ham but due to his contract situation, the board will have to settle for Arsenal’s third bid.
There isn’t a ready-made replacement for Rice that will be available for a reasonable fee. Therefore, looking to land multiple players to add strength and depth has to be the route to go down.

Moyes’ squad could end up becoming a much more well-rounded unit as a result of Rice departing. With the Europa League also to contend with, it’s essential that a busy summer now ensues.
Looking ahead to the transfer window, at least two midfielders and a striker have to be a priority for David Moyes. It’s essential that the board look to make the Hammers are more well-rounded side as a result of Rice’s departure from the London Stadium.
