Ferdinand sends Edson Alvarez message after scenes away from West Ham

West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez got his hands on the Gold Cup yet again for Mexico overnight.

The Mexican enforcer was the hero for his country again, scoring the winning goal for Mexico’s record-setting tenth title after a 2-1 win against the United States.

Alvarez’s 77th-minute winner sparked chaotic scenes from the Mexican supporters after his goal was initially ruled out before a dramatic VAR intervention.

Alvarez will be hoping to take this positive momentum into the new season with West Ham, with the midfielder surely getting excited at the prospect of El Hadji Malick Diouf signing for the Hammers.

Ferdinand sends message to Alvarez after triumph with Mexico

With big first-team players like Mohammed Kudus looking destined to leave in the summer, retaining other key assets like Alvarez will be important if Potter wants to improve on West Ham’s previous Premier League campaign, which was lacklustre at best.

West Ham were closer to being relegated than they were to qualifying for European competition last season.

Following the celebrations after Alvarez’s triumph with Mexico, he took to his personal Instagram (7 July) and posted a picture of himself with the Gold Cup and the award for being the Most Valuable Player after his heroics in the final.

Former player Anton Ferdinand, who made over 100 appearances for the Hammers in his five-year spell at the club, was quick to message Alvarez following his success.

Under the post, Ferdinand commented, saying, “Congratulations”.

West Ham need to provide Alvarez with midfield reinforcements

If West Ham want to claw their way back up the Premier League table, then signing midfielders to play alongside Alvarez will be crucial.

The Hammers have had some high-profile midfielders at the London Stadium in recent seasons, like the loan signing of Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City; however, the England international failed to live up to expectations.

Rocco Reitz could join Alvarez in West Ham’s engine room, with the midfielder being linked with making a £25.7million move from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Potter knows he needs things to change quickly.
