Fabrizio Romano shares sack update on West Ham United boss David Moyes after Newcastle defeat

West Ham manager David Moyes has insisted he still has the support of the club’s board following the 5-1 defeat to Newcastle on Wednesday (5 April).

The Hammers were torn apart by the Magpies in their Premier League clash at the London Stadium, despite trailing just 2-1 at the halfway stage.

The very disappointing result has heaped the pressure on Moyes, with West Ham only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

“I’ve got no doubt they are behind me,” said Moyes, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. “I’m confident in the way they work and what they think.

“If you’re a manager and you lose badly like I did, you’re always in jeopardy and I understand that.”

Moyes keen to turn things around

There are now four clubs sitting on 27 points in what is a hugely competitive relegation battle, with West Ham, Everton, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth all level towards the bottom.

Only Leicester (25) and Southampton (23) have fewer points than the Hammers, although in some positive news for Moyes’s side, they do have a game in hand over their fellow strugglers.

Also in West Ham’s favour is their superior goal difference, largely down to their stern defence amid plenty of issues going forward.

Moyes would be foolish to believe his position is 100% safe, but it does seem that the East London outfit will stick by their boss for the time being.

Most of the other clubs in danger of the drop have sacked their manager this season, but West Ham’s European venture is perhaps keeping Moyes in his job.

The club are into the last eight of the Europa Conference League, with silverware in that competition keeping spirits up amid a depressing league campaign.

Spirits had been lifted after three points and a clean sheet against Southampton on Sunday (2 April), but the Hammers have been sent crashing back down to earth by Eddie Howe’s men.
