ExWHUemployee: West Ham United thought they had deal done for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata

West Ham United believed they had a deal done for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata late on deadline day, according to ExWHUemployee.

In a Patreon post, the reliable source shared that the Irons started talks with the Italian side at 7 pm for the Colombian international.

After progressing towards a done deal, Atalanta then went quiet and the Hammers were left with nothing.

Writing on the West Ham Way Patreon in the past few hours (01 February, 12:37 am) Ex shared the negative news.

“We can confirm that the club started working on a deal for Duvan Zapata, a Colombian forward at Atalanta at 7 pm,” he wrote.

“They thought they had got the deal done. Then apparently Atalanta went quiet and the deal fell through. This has been given to us by one of our main sources after the window closed.

“It does make you question why we start working on deals so late.”

Really?

You have got to be kidding us.

This will have been because there was hope of signing Benfica forward Darwin Nunez, who was clearly looking like the main target yesterday.

Having said that, was there really ever any chance of that happening?

The fact that GSB and Daniel Kretinsky had shown they had money to spend and we still didn’t go out and secure what we need, makes it all the while more frustrating.

Zapata was clearly there for the taking, and with his Champions League experience, would have been a brilliant addition to the squad.

Instead, we are now left with nothing and a threadbare attack in one of our most important seasons to date – let’s hope nothing dramatically backfires.
