ExWHUEmployee: Conor Coventry unlikely to leave on loan this summer

Reliable West Ham insider ExWHUEmployee believes Conor Coventry will not be loaned out this summer unless a good club is keen on taking him.

The Hammers central midfielder has impressed in the pre-season games thus far and has been one of the club’s better players.

A couple of weeks ago, The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas suggested that the club were planning to loan him out this summer, but ExWHUEmployee claims that he’s expected to stay, given the club’s Europa League commitments.

In the Q&A session of his West Ham Way Patreon page, he responded to questions surrounding Coventry’s future.

He said, “I would like to think with Europa he would stay but depends who comes for him.”

Should keep him

Players at Coventry’s age indeed benefit a great deal from going out on loan as they get regular minutes of first-team football under their belt which in turn helps them mature to compete for a place in the senior teams of their parent clubs.

However, once teams are competing in Europe, as is the case with us next season, squad depth is key and having a player like Coventry to come into midfield – an area of the pitch we’re already pretty thin in, would be beneficial.

He’s already thriving under David Moyes and despite the presence of some of the senior and established first-team players, the young Englishman is managing to stand out.

His timing of the tackle has been exemplary and he’s also been a good distributor of the ball.

In October last year, Daily Mail’s Secret Scout lauded the midfielder’s performances.

They wrote, “Conor Coventry is powerful in the challenge while he is not frightened to surge forward… if Declan Rice leaves or Mark Noble struggles to maintain his pace, he may enjoy a breakthrough at West Ham.”

The 21-year-old is on the periphery of first-team football, and in our view, he’s best suited to ply his trade at the London Stadium next season.
