Edson Alvarez torn to shreds by Mexican media after what ‘abysmal’ West Ham United star did
Edson Alvarez has been picked out by Mexican media for a poor performance against Uruguay while on international duty from West Ham United on Thursday (6 June).
The Hammers midfielder featured for his nation in a friendly as Jaime Lozano’s side began preparations for the Copa America.
It is safe to say that things got off to the worst possible start as El Tri lost 4-0 against Marcelo Bielsa’s side with Alvarez making the headlines.
Given the nature of the result, the West Ham man was picked out by the media for all the wrong reasons.
ESPN Mexico suggested (6 June) that he constantly “lost balls in the belt of the field that Uruguay took advantage of.”
This led to ESPN Deportes journalist Herculez Gomez taking to X to say that the Mexico midfield trio, including Alvarez, was “abysmal”.
He added: “No bite. No athleticism. No heart tonight. Out of all the lines that was the most concerning.”
Edson Alvarez tough time away from West Ham
The versatile midfielder joined the Hammers last summer as a partial replacement for the outgoing Declan Rice who joined Arsenal.
Alvarez came in from Ajax and had a positive campaign despite not featuring as regularly as he might have wanted to.
David Moyes was reluctant to trust him in certain games due to his lack of discipline which saw him miss plenty of games through suspension.
In 28 starts and three substitute appearances, he picked up 11 yellow cards while scoring and assisting just one goal respectively [FotMob].
West Ham fans have high hopes for the midfielder after his debut season with the hope that next campaign he will be better adapted to the Premier League.
With that being said, this performance for Mexico will not excite fans as the media in his homeland have slammed him for his antics.
He will need to improve moving into the Copa America and into the new league season under Julen Lopetegui.
In other West Ham news, the club are positioned to sign a new player despite a transfer threat from Tottenham.
