Don Hutchison shares ‘nightmare’ admission on West Ham United legend Paolo Di Canio after what he did
Don Hutchison has shared why Paolo Di Canio was a “nightmare” after Jermain Defoe has spoken about his experience with the forward at West Ham.
Speaking on the BBC’s The Players Channel podcast on Monday (11 December), Defoe revealed how his former teammate refused to play and went home after ex-Hammers boss Glenn Roeder dropped him to the bench for a game.
Responding to the comments about the Italian on Twitter on Monday, Hutchison said this was the side of the striker that Irons fans “didn’t see” as he wrecked training sessions and refused to play away games in the north, but he added that he was also “funny and brilliant”.
“That’s the side of Paolo West Ham fans didn’t see,” said Hutchison. “Wrecking training sessions/not playing away games up north. Nightmare one day/funny and brilliant the next.”

It doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear this from Di Canio’s former teammates as he was a pretty controversial character at times.
But he was also extremely passionate about the game and is likely to just have been disappointed that he wasn’t named in the starting lineup on the occasion that Defoe talked about.
It sounds as though Hutchison wasn’t completely impressed by some of the Italian’s antics after noting how he ruined training sessions and refused to play sometimes.
There is no doubt that Di Canio is a Hammers legend, though, after he put in a number of excellent performances and scored incredible goals during his time at the club.
He cemented himself as one of the most iconic players to ever play in the Premier League and that’s why he is so fondly thought of by so many people.
