Don Hutchison blasts Said Benrahma after what he did for West Ham United v Olympiacos, ‘bad decision’

Don Hutchison has blasted Said Benrahma after what he did in the first half for West Ham against Olympiacos on Thursday (9 November).

Speaking on co-commentary for TNT Sports on Thursday (08:02pm), the pundit said it was a “bad decision” from the Algerian international as he decided to shoot from long range instead of playing in Lucas Paqueta.

He added that the 28-year-old winger was “very ambitious” to take the shot on from distance as he looked to put the Hammers ahead in their 1-0 win against the Greek side.

“It’s a bad decision, he should’ve put Lucas Paqueta in,” said Hutchison. “Paqueta, the Brazilian, tonight playing as a number 10. Benrahma off the left-hand side and he should’ve put him in. Around about now, he was in lots of space. Very ambitious taking that shot on from that distance.”

Wrong option

There is no doubt that Benrahma took the wrong option by trying to shoot from almost 30 yards out as his shot drifted harmlessly past the post.

After finding some space, he could have played Paqueta in down the left, but Jarrod Bowen was also making a run through the middle into a dangerous area.

The Algerian’s decision-making is often criticised as he tends to take on ambitious long-range efforts instead of trying to pick out a teammate, who could be in a better position.

The winger does have quality in his locker and he can certainly find the back of the net from distance, but he just needs to be more aware of where his teammates are sometimes.

It’s something David Moyes wouldn’t have liked to have seen from Benrahma in this instance after handing him the opportunity to impress after his minutes in the side have been reduced this season.
