Declan Rice ‘transfer clause twist emerges’ after Arsenal Champions League heroics

West Ham have been left wishing they demanded more money from the sale of Declan Rice, though they may be in line to receive it after the latest update.

It is now approaching two years since Rice left West Ham to join Arsenal, and while he wasn’t found much success with the Gunners, the same can be said for the Irons this season.

Under Julen Lopetegui, the Hammers looked as though they may have actually been in a relegation fight, with much of that failure down to the recruitment that arrived as a result of the transfer fee received from the Englishman.

Rice departed the London Stadium for a world record fee for an English player, in a rumoured £105million deal, and West Ham sources have clarified the clauses involved.

Arsenal Champions League success will not impact West Ham

Rice has been outstanding since he made the move to Arsenal, as painful as that may be to say, and his two goals against Real Madrid have put his side in good standing to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition.

With that in mind, many believed that the further the Gunner progressed, the more money West Ham would receive through additional clauses and incentives, though that is not the case.

West Ham sources told Hammers News that the initial deal for Rice was worth £100m, with the additional £5m coming from those clauses.

Rice has put up some decent numbers for Arsenal.

“We only get £1m each time they qualify for the Champions League – and a maximum of five times. The deal was £100m plus five £1m Champions League qualifications add-on payments.”

It may seem like a missed opportunity for the Irons, and certainly one that would have subdued the concern if Arsenal were to go on and win the Champions League.

West Ham need to strengthen this summer

If the Hammers are to progress under Graham Potter, recruitment needs to be perfect in the summer, and there can’t be any room for errors.

The foundations of a very good squad are present at the London Stadium, but a few key pieces are missing, and without signings, the failures of the current campaign will be repeated.

Potter will, of course, have a big say in who comes and goes, but the recruitment team have a huge task on their hands to ensure that West Ham are in a good position squad-wise come the start of the new campaign.
