David Sullivan makes Julen Lopetegui sack decision at West Ham United

Julen Lopetegui retains the full support of David Sullivan at West Ham United, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported in its print edition on Friday [27 September, pg 49] that there is no immediate pressure in East London for Lopetegui after the 5-1 loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup.

West Ham have won two out of their seven opening fixtures under Lopetegui and, while Sullivan may offer his full support to the Spaniard, the supporters need to be won over after another humiliating defeat.

West Ham United need a win sooner rather than later

The Hammers took the lead on Wednesday [25 September] at Anfield and looked the most threatening of the two sides inside the opening 20 minutes.

However, Lopetegui’s side offered little more following the goal excluding the occasional counterattack and to record a consecutive 5-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, to a heavily rotated side, is telling of where this West Ham side stands under the new boss this season.

It was Wataru Endo kicking the ball into Jarell Quansah for an own goal that opened the scoring so technically, the Irons failed to score altogether.

Carlos Soler, a Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, was non-existent in a midfield battle with Endo and Curtis Jones whereas Edson Alvarez albeit it mattered little on the result, hacked down Mohamed Salah near the halfway line to receive his marching orders.

While Lopetegui has been afforded the benefit of the doubt [talkSPORT] after his abysmal start to life in East London, the Irons stand no chance of recording a European finish in the Premier League this season if they cannot win against a heavily rotated Liverpool side.

The trip to Brentford on Saturday [28 September] has now become a must-win match and failure to do so risks the London Stadium turning volatile after only six league matches into the season. Lopetegui must show his worth in the coming weeks.
