David Moyes told Kidderminster he had £100m to spend on West Ham squad in January

David Moyes had £100million to spend on West Ham transfers in January despite buying no players, according to Kidderminster owner Richard Lane.

The Hammers boss reportedly shared the financial information with Harriers assistant manager Russell Penn following the FA Cup victory at the start of the month.

Fans were left frustrated during the window that no signings were brought in at what was seen to be a crucial juncture for a squad in need of reinforcements.

Speaking to LBC’s James O’Brien on Wednesday (23 February), via Knees Up Mother Brown, Lane complained about the monetary contrast between the two side’s situations, saying: “The sort of money we’re talking about, what is potentially given to non-league clubs to give them security for many years to come hasn’t happened on this occasion.

“I was disappointed and frustrated in that, especially when you hear David Moyes talking to our assistant manager about having £100million in the kitty for January transfers.

“You just think, they were given £100million to sign a few players – and one apparently one turned down a £40million offer. They’re talking about millions, while we’re still in the pennies and pounds.”

No excuse

It is not a great look for the Irons boss to be discussing big money with sixth-tier opposition who are struggling financially.

It is also a frustrating reminder that the transfer window was wasted.

The manager seems to be more interested in talking about the club’s financial muscle rather than properly utilising it, as he also spoke about the “three record transfer bids” that failed (Evening Standard).

Everybody knows that the level of the finances at the top of the English football pyramid is crazy, and the debate about whether it is fair is moot.

The money is there because the broadcasters will pay it, and they will pay it because they can make it back from viewers.

Clearly it is commendable to not waste cash, but instead of sending out £50million-plus bids for players such as Leeds pair Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, which had little-to-no chance of succeeding, Moyes should have had feasible targets in mind.

If West Ham end the season finishing outside of the European places but with a full bank account it will be scant consolation.

In other West Ham news, the club may spend big for this star of Euro 2020.
