David Moyes shares verdict on England chances of West Ham ace Aaron Cresswell
David Moyes has backed West Ham United defender Aaron Cresswell to earn an England call-up after his impressive start to the season.
The Hammers boss admitted that he is expecting Gareth Southgate to watch the left-back sooner rather than later in the Premier League.
Moyes labelled Cresswell as “excellent” and backed him to continue with his impressive start to the season at the London Stadium.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the Aston Villa game, Moyes claimed he wouldn’t be surprised to see Southgate.
“Aaron Cresswell has been excellent for us,” he said.
“Because he can play a couple of roles and he’s left-sided, it wouldn’t be a surprise to me if Gareth Southgate called him up for England in the future.
“If he keeps up the form he’s in and continues playing as well as he does, he’ll certainly be getting watched – I have no doubt about that.”
Moyes has transformed Cresswell this season, and it is coming through in his performances for the Hammers.
Moving him from left-back into one of the three central defenders has taken less responsibility off his shoulders and allowed him to dictate play more.
The 30-year-old still has three assists with his quality set-pieces and has been stronger in defence – helping this run of clean-sheets.
Cresswell is averaging nearly five interceptions and almost nine recoveries each game according to WyScout, and that clearly isn’t going unnoticed.
Frank McAvennie has exclusively claimed that he doesn’t deserve international recognition, and it will all depend on what Southgate thinks – will he start to appear?
