David Moyes shares Nayef Aguerd injury update for West Ham United Europa Conference League clash v Gent

West Ham manager David Moyes has confirmed that Nayef Aguerd “should be okay” for the match against Gent on Thursday (20 April).

The Hammers host the Belgian outfit at the London Stadium in the Europa Conference League quarter-final second leg.

It is all to play for in East London after the two clubs played out a 1-1 draw in Belgium last Thursday (13 April).

When asked about his team news for the second leg clash against Gent, Moyes told reporters that rotation is key, as well as providing an update on Aguerd.

“Over the years, we’ve had to chop and change the team,” said Moyes, as quoted by the official West Ham website. “The hardest thing about this competition is playing Thursday-Sunday and that does have an impact on all managers. It’s not quite as easy as picking your best players.

“We expect Nayef to be okay. He got a foot injury over there and didn’t recover in time for Sunday but he should be okay for tomorrow.”

Huge clash

It is a massive moment in West Ham’s season, with a precious spot in the semi-finals of a European competition up for grabs should they make it past Gent.

But the Belgian outfit proved difficult to get past in the first leg, with the club enjoying a strong season, where they sit fourth in the league table.

The Hammers are currently struggling in the Premier League, but they will be full of confidence after their 2-2 draw with league leaders Arsenal on Sunday (16 April), coming from two goals down against the Gunners.

Moreover, the upcoming clash against Gent takes place at the London Stadium, with the home supporters set to be in full voice on the night, which is a huge asset in any big European clash.

Aguerd’s foot injury forced him out of that draw with Arsenal, but in positive news for the Hammers he looks set to return to the pitch against Gent.

Moyes will need all of his squad to be on top form as they seek to continue their fantastic European journey.
