David Moyes set to put faith in West Ham duo Issa Diop and Craig Dawson

West Ham are unlikely to sign a first-choice centre-back in January despite injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, according to Claret and Hugh.

The Hammers duo both faced long-term injuries with Ogbonna set to be ruled out for the rest of the season.

David Moyes is understood to be content with Issa Diop and Craig Dawson being his top two centre-back picks, but does want a backup for them in January.

The aforementioned report read, “For the foreseeable future at least in the Premier League, the West Ham manager will be putting all his faith in the ‘Dawson/Diop’ double-act at the centre of our defence.

“While Moyes has admitted he might have to go looking for an extra defender now, it’s unlikely to be a big-name, big-money purchase, more likely a backup to what he has already got in place.”

Not impressive

Diop and Dawson have both shown lapses in concentration over the last year or so.

The fact that West Ham signed a defender of Kurt Zouma’s calibre was because they are not reliable enough.

Ogbonna is already 33 so he needed to be replaced at the end of the season anyway.

However, given the fact that he’s injured now, the club should move their plans forward and try signing a big name in January.

It’s not like the Hammers are set for a mid-table finish like they have over the last few years.

They’re in contention to finish in the top four and to beat the likes of Manchester United and Spurs for that fourth spot, they’re going to have to be at their very best and will need a quality centre-back starting every week.
