David Moyes seems to criticise Nayef Aguerd in West Ham United press conference on Friday

West Ham manager David Moyes has commented on the mistakes his defenders made in the recent 5-1 loss to Newcastle

The under-pressure boss is eager for his side to cut out such mistakes against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday (8 April).

The Hammers were humiliated by the Magpies at the London Stadium on Wednesday (5 April), but now have the chance to recover away to the Cottagers this weekend.

“I’d rather them try and play and play well,” said Moyes, as quoted by Football London. “When you do that though, you can make mistakes some of the time.

“If it’s happening regularly it’s a problem, if it’s happening once in a while it’s okay.”

Perfect opportunity

If there was ever a game for Moyes to really find some luck going in his direction, it is this weekend against Fulham.

The hosts will be without manager Marco Silva and lethal striker Aleksandar Mitrovic for the clash, with both suspended following their red cards against Manchester United last month.

That will impact the home side massively on the pitch, but Fulham will also be unsettled behind the scenes following the eight-match ban for Mitrovic and the two-match ban for Silva.

Moyes can use that situation to his advantage at Craven Cottage, with the West Ham boss fighting for his role in the dugout following the Newcastle humiliation.

West Ham’s defence was unusually unstable against the Magpies, having performed admirably for the majority of the campaign.

Amid attacking struggles, their defensive record has helped them stay out of even more danger, if that was even possible.

Defender Aguerd quickly went from hero with his goal against Southampton on Sunday (2 April) to zero with his mistakes against Newcastle, with the Moroccan unquestionably eager to bounce back with a top display this weekend.
