David Moyes open to loan market to boost West Ham squad

West Ham are interested in bringing players to the club on loan this month if they can boost the level of the squad, according to David Moyes.

The Hammers saw a run of four wins in a row snapped as they were beaten 3-2 at home to relegation strugglers Leeds United, just a few days after beating Norwich in the league.

Moyes blamed the defeat on a number of problems, including the strength of the squad and admitted during his post-match presser [via Football.London] that the loan market is a possibility, although he denied signing just for signing sake.

“Yes, but I do not like the word extra bodies, because extra bodies end up not being good enough. You want to bring in bodies who are good enough to have an impact on the team.

“Extra bodies don’t count for anything, it is like a sugar rush but eventually, it wears off. You are better of trying to get the right players and if not sticking with what you have got.

“The players have done a brilliant job but today was just a little too much to ask them to go again at the end of this week.”

West Ham

Needed

As West Ham chase the Champions League places for the first time in their history, adding strength in depth is absolutely necessary to their chances.

Of the seven clubs currently seen as being in the race for the top four, the Hammers have the weakest squad when it comes to strength in numbers.

A striker and defender have been reported as the necessary positions that the club want to add to, and while they have been linked with plenty of names no business has taken place yet.

A loan could provide a way of getting sufficient cover and bolstering the squad’s ability to compete, while also not tying them into any long-term deals if they were to not work out.

Identifying targets is the hard part, but Moyes is firm on not signing anyone for the sake of it which is the right way to go. Signings are needed, and loans are a possibility now.
