David Moyes ‘one step away’ from being sacked at West Ham United

David Moyes is “one step away” from being sacked as manager of West Ham United, with Rafael Benitez lined up to replace him according to Calciomercato.

The Hammers have lost 12 of their 19 Premier League games this season and are currently sitting in the relegation zone despite spending over £170m in the summer transfer window.

After defeat to Wolves in the most recent clash this past weekend, the Italian outlet now report that the club are close to removing him as manager and replacing him with Champions League winning coach Benitez.

“Bottom of the table, coupled with yet another league defeat, could soon cost David Moyes dearly,” they wrote (16 January).

“The West Ham manager is in fact one step away from being sacked. The likely replacement? An old acquaintance from Serie A: Rafa Benitez, former coach of Inter and Napoli and European champion with Liverpool in 2005.”

Surely not?

Moyes is likely to leave in the near future, especially if the club doesn’t manage to turn the results around any time soon.

That isn’t in question, and it would be far more of a surprise at this stage if he were able to turn things around.

However with Rafa Benitez being linked as the man to come in, that would suggest that groundwork has already been laid but on top of that, the fact the board want him in.

Benitez wouldn’t be a particularly popular appointment at the London Stadium either, with fans wanting to get away from the defensive football that Moyes currently employs with whoever it is that replaces him.

It’s unlikely to be long before we find out how true this story is and if Benitez really is likely to come to the London Stadium in the home dugout for West Ham, but we’d rather never find out and Moyes just starts winning games again.
