David Moyes explains why West Ham didn’t move for Eberechi Eze this summer
West Ham boss David Moyes has claimed that ‘financial capabilities’ stopped the Hammers making a move for Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze.
Moyes’ comments come ahead of the Irons’ tie against Palace who signed Eze from QPR in the summer.
The 22-year-old has started life well in the Premier League and Moyes has cursed his luck that his side were unable to sign the winger.
Moyes is quoted by Football.London as saying, “I think the timing for Eze, we didn’t have the finances at the time to go for Eze when that deal was becoming available.
“Things only changed for us late in the window as far as finances went really because we had other priorities like we were trying to get a central defender in, we were looking at a full-back at the time as well.
“At that time we hadn’t got a great deal of money to spend. That changed as the window went on, [Grady] Diangana left and it just freed up a little bit of money as we went on but at the time we just weren’t there for Eze because we didn’t have the financial capabilities to do that at the time.”
Eze has one goal and two assists in 11 Premier League appearances this season and while the Hammers aren’t missing his talent, there is no doubting he that is a quality player.
West Ham do have plenty of quality wingers at the club, especially after securing the signing of Said Behrahma from Brentford.
If the Irons are to dip into the transfer market next month they won’t be looking for wide men but the signing of Eze does seem like a missed opportunity.
The COVID pandemic no doubt had an impact on West Ham’s finances and the club can’t be blamed for not spending a substantial fee on an unproven Premier League player.
Hopefully, Eze doesn’t score against the Hammers when the teams meet on Wednesday night.
