David Gold: West Ham hierarchy gave David Moyes guard of honour after Liverpool win
David Moyes got his first-ever win over a Jurgen Klopp-managed side when West Ham handed Liverpool a 3-2 loss at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Ending the Reds’ 25-game unbeaten run did not come easy as the Hammers fought to hold on to all three points to go third in the Premier League table heading into the international break.
The West Ham board members were present to see their side send a statement of intent to the rest of the league with the hard-earned win, and co-owner David Gold has revealed how they reacted when the manager came into the room after the game.
“He is very easy to work with, proper person and certainly one of the best managers I’ve worked with in my 27 years in football,” Gold told talkSPORT host Jim White.
“I’m so pleased for him as he’s worked so hard. He’s had his down days, but seeing him come into the boardroom after the victory yesterday was fantastic.
“He got a guard of honour as he walked into the boardroom. It was fantastic.”
Brilliant
Moyes has managed to turn his career around after some uninspiring spells at Manchester United, Sunderland and Real Sociedad, and starting his 1001st game as a manager with a victory would have been very pleasing.
West Ham do not have an expensive squad and have not splashed a lot of cash under the Scot, but he has managed to turn this crop of players into some of the best in the land.
Moyes has also assembled a brilliant backroom staff made up of coaches with managerial experiences, and that has massively helped.
West Ham are credible challengers for the top-four this term, and they could realistically mount a title bid and fight for other major silverware if Moyes is strongly backed in the transfer market.
The Hammers board need to do more to support him, and he has shown them what he is capable of doing on a decent budget.
There is still a lot for this squad to do to prove themselves as a force to reckon with in the English top-flight, but things look very promising at the moment.
