Darren Lewis: A very big finish to the transfer window is in store for West Ham United

The Mirror’s Darren Lewis has suggested a busy end to the transfer window is in store at West Ham United as David Moyes eyes further additions.

The Irons started their Premier League campaign with one fit centre-back as they lost 2-0 to Manchester City at the London Stadium.

However, Lewis has provided hope that the Hammers are in for a busy end to the window.

West Ham

Talking on talkSPORT’s Gameday Podcast, Lewis said (20:18, 8 August): “It was a stark wake-up call for the club really [defeat to City].

“Once the window closes they can’t afford not to have more reinforcements.

“They need another striker, they need another left-back, they need another centre-half.

“I know that they’re planning for a very big finish to the window and would expect them to have more depth by the time we reach 1 September.”

Three more?

Would three more signings constitute a successful window for West Ham?

Moyes was so unfortunate to lose Nayef Aguerd in preseason, with the Moroccan earmarked as a key defensive lynchpin for the upcoming campaign.

Heading into the Manchester City fixture with a botched-up defence was far from ideal, and in fact, you could say the Hammers did well to keep the deficit to two, especially considering the mood Erling Haaland was in on Sunday.

If Moyes had Aguerd fit and Gianluca Scamacca match sharp then it could well have been a very different outcome on Sunday.

West Ham

The season has probably started a little too soon for the club with West Ham’s new faces still needing time to bed into proceedings at the London Stadium.

Lewis is a respected journalist and West Ham fans should take hope in the fact that he said “he knows” they’re in for a big finish to the window.

Another central defender is a must for Moyes with Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth reporting (via Twitter, 9 August) that the club have tabled a bid for PSG defender Thilo Kehrer.
