Danny Baker can’t believe West Ham ‘obscenity’ as Millwall fan reacts to controversy

West Ham lost their relegation six-pointer against Nottingham Forest in contentious fashion.

Nottingham Forest beat West Ham 2-1 on Tuesday night, leaving the Hammers seven points adrift of safety in the Premier League.

West Ham had taken the lead on 13 minutes thanks to a Murillo own goal, and were briefly 2-0 to the good in the second half before Crysencio Summerville’s goal was disallowed for offside.

Nicolas Dominguez then equalised on 55 minutes, before Morgan Gibbs-White converted a penalty in the 89th minute to seal a vital and dramatic win for Sean Dyche’s side.

Nuno Espirito Santo appeared resigned to being sacked in his post-match interview, as David Sullivan will surely now take action in the dugout to try and force through improvement, and ultimately, Premier League survival.

Millwall fan Danny Baker drops honest West Ham claim

The main talking point and ultimate watershed moment from West Ham‘s loss to Nottingham Forest was VAR’s decision to award the away side a penalty.

Alphonse Areola collided with Gibbs-White as he attempted to punch the ball clear, and whilst referee Tony Harrington didn’t give the decision on-field, VAR intervened and recommended he take another look at it on the screen, despite the ball already being headed away.

Many West Ham supporters now feel that Championship football is destined to be on the agenda at the London Stadium for the 2026-27 season, and understandably, most Millwall fans are revelling in the Hammers’ predicament.

One of those – by his own admission – is the well-known comedy writer, journalist and radio DJ Danny Baker, but even he was sympathetic towards West Ham and their frustration surrounding that controversial penalty incident.

Writing via his X account on Tuesday night, Baker said: “I am a Millwall supporter. Nothing pleases us more than West Ham struggling.

“But that was not a penalty. Goalkeeper goes for the ball at the same time as the forward. Someone gets there first, and they collide. VAR is such an obscenity to the game.”

West Ham will surely sack Nuno, but the question is who would want the job?

A club of West Ham’s size, both in stature, history and fanbase, shouldn’t be viewed as somewhat of a poisoned chalice for a manager, but it’s difficult to view the current situation as being anything other than that for whoever arrives to replace Nuno if and when he goes.

Having passed up their golden opportunity to put points on the board from games against the likes of Fulham, Wolves and Nottingham Forest, the Hammers now face Tottenham, Sunderland and Chelsea in their next three Premier League matches.

It’s hard to see where any points, let alone three, come from there. And so, with a disillusioned fanbase and Championship football looking almost certain, the question might not be will Nuno get sacked, but rather, who would be willing to take the job?

Someone like Michael Carrick may do so out of loyalty to his former club, but take his connection to West Ham out of the equation, and would the former Middlesbrough head coach really be the right man?

He left Boro with their fans largely fed up with his slow build-up, possession-based approach and his unwillingness to change from his 4-2-3-1 system, and it was also revealed to have been a miscommunication problem regarding transfer strategy in his final transfer window at the club.

If not Carrick, then who else? Frank Lampard surely won’t leave Coventry City, Slaven Bilic? Enzo Maresca? Gareth Southgate? It’s safe to assume that none of those three candidates would inspire too many West Ham fans either.
