Chris Waddle: Declan Rice would be good for Newcastle

Newcastle have been urged to make a move for West Ham ace Declan Rice by Chris Waddle.

The Magpies saw their ownership change from the unpopular Mike Ashley to the Public Investment Fund (PIF) earlier this month.

Given the PIF’s deep pockets there is an assumption that they will be willing to spend big to make Newcastle an elite club.

Discussing the potential signings they could make, Waddle, a BBC pundit told The Sun, “What about Kalvin Phillips at Leeds? Declan Rice. Marco Asensio at Real Madrid.

“There are so many talented players at a good age, and this is what it’s about.”

Not happening

The only clubs that Rice moves to if he even does, is to the elites of the English game.

There’s an understanding that the 22-year-old fancies playing in the Champions League and like any player, wants to win trophies.

While that can happen at Newcastle, it will take millions and maybe even billions of investment to get them to that level, which is not something he would fancy.

If he wants to be at a club that’s on the rise then he can probably stay put at the London Stadium where he’s admired by the fanbase and the manager.

What Waddle is doing is some lazy FIFA-style punditry where Newcastle can just pay whatever to sign whoever they want.

The transfer market is a lot more complicated and despite all their riches, a move to Newcastle will be seen as a step down, not a step up for Rice.
