Chris Sutton shares ‘phenomenal’ David Moyes sack verdict after West Ham United clash v Sheffield United

Chris Sutton has shared his verdict on calls for David Moyes to be sacked at West Ham United, admitting that he believes the Scotsman is doing a “phenomenal job” at the London Stadium.

Tensions rose in the Hammers’ away end during their 2-2 draw with Sheffield United on Sunday (21 January) with some supporters aiming chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” towards the Irons boss after the introduction of Ben Johnson.

While Moyes is yet to extend his contract, which expires at the end of the season, Sutton cannot believe that supporters want the 60-year-old sacked and believes he deserves more credit for the job that he’s done.

Speaking on It’s All Kicking Off (22 January, 4:20) he said: “I don’t know anybody in the world of football who thinks that David Moyes hasn’t done an excellent job at West Ham and who thinks at this moment in time that David Moyes is under pressure for his job.

“I don’t understand that headline in truth. I think it’s deeply, deeply unfair on David Moyes and really unnecessary. If you talk about the game yesterday, I’m not saying West Ham played well, I think David Moyes said it was one of their worst performances of the season, but they were on the wrong end of a couple of poor decisions at the end.

“West Ham were wronged, they’re in sixth place, I think they topped their Europa League group, they have key players missing. I know a lot of teams have to put up with injuries but no Paqueta, no Alvarez, no Kudus who has been an exceptional piece of business and David Moyes has done a phenomenal job.

“I don’t know why we’re even arguing this. I don’t understand where that headline has come from in truth.”

Phenomenal job

The irony at Bramall Lane on Sunday was the fact that Ben Johnson put in an excellent midfield performance at the heart of Moyes’ side following his introduction, proving the Scotsman has some idea what he is doing.

Few managers have ever been as successful as the 60-year-old in the modern era at West Ham and it seems bizarre that some supporters are so keen to see the back of him.

West Ham

The football may not always be the most exciting, but it gets results. West Ham are still smashing it in Europe and right in the fight for the European places in the Premier League, that is not form that should see a manager sacked.

Hopefully, those in charge at the London Stadium have a similar opinion to Sutton and Moyes will be kept in most for at least the remainder of the season.
